3 Heart-Healthy Tonics to Love Your Cardiovascular System
Your heart beats about 100,000 times every single day, and most of us rarely stop to think about what we can do to support this incredible organ. Heart health is something I became much more intentional about as I learned how profoundly food choices affect cardiovascular function. The research on plant-based ingredients for heart health is genuinely exciting, and these tonics are my way of putting that research into practice.
These three heart-healthy tonics feature ingredients with robust scientific backing for cardiovascular support. They address different aspects of heart health, from blood pressure regulation to circulation to the strength of the heart muscle itself. All are completely vegan and made from ingredients available at regular grocery stores or the natural foods section.
As always, these tonics are meant to complement a healthy lifestyle and are not a replacement for medical care. If you have heart concerns, please work with your healthcare provider.
1. Hibiscus Heart Tonic
This beautiful ruby-red tonic is as stunning to look at as it is beneficial to drink. Hibiscus tea has become one of my absolute favorites, not just for its tart, cranberry-like flavor, but because the research on its cardiovascular benefits is remarkably strong.
Ingredients
- 1 cup brewed hibiscus tea (2 hibiscus tea bags or 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers steeped for 10 minutes)
- 1/4 cup pomegranate juice (100% pure)
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 tablespoon agave nectar
Instructions
- Brew the hibiscus tea by steeping the tea bags or dried flowers in 1 cup of hot water for 10 minutes. The longer steep time extracts more of the beneficial compounds.
- Let the tea cool to a warm or room temperature.
- Add the pomegranate juice, lemon juice, and agave nectar.
- Stir well and enjoy. This tonic is also delicious served cold over ice.
Why These Ingredients Help
Hibiscus tea has been the subject of numerous clinical studies focused on blood pressure. The anthocyanins and other polyphenols in hibiscus have been shown to help relax blood vessel walls and support healthy blood pressure levels. Several studies have found that drinking hibiscus tea daily can produce measurable reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure over 4 to 6 weeks. Hibiscus also has natural ACE-inhibitor properties, meaning it works through similar pathways as some blood pressure medications, though much more gently.
Pomegranate juice is one of the most heart-protective foods available. It is exceptionally rich in antioxidants called punicalagins that protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, which is a key step in the development of arterial plaque. Pomegranate juice has also been shown to improve blood flow and reduce arterial stiffness.
Lemon juice adds vitamin C, which supports the health of blood vessel walls, and the citric acid helps improve the absorption of the polyphenols from the hibiscus and pomegranate.
Agave nectar balances the tartness of the hibiscus and pomegranate while keeping the tonic vegan-friendly.
Storage Tips
Brewed hibiscus tea can be made in a larger batch and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Dried hibiscus flowers keep in an airtight container for up to 2 years. Opened pomegranate juice should be refrigerated and used within 5 to 7 days. You can freeze pomegranate juice in ice cube trays for longer storage.
2. Beet Heart Boost Tonic
Beet juice has become one of the most researched foods in cardiovascular science, and the results are impressive. This tonic combines beets with other heart-friendly ingredients for a drink that is vibrant, slightly sweet, and genuinely good for your cardiovascular system.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup fresh beet juice (or 100% pure beet juice)
- 1/4 cup apple juice
- 1 stalk celery, juiced (or 2 tablespoons celery juice)
- Juice of half a lemon
Instructions
- If juicing fresh, run a medium beet and a celery stalk through a juicer. Otherwise, combine store-bought beet juice and celery juice.
- Add the apple juice and lemon juice.
- Stir well and drink immediately.
- This tonic is best consumed in the morning for sustained cardiovascular support throughout the day.
Why These Ingredients Help
Beet juice is extraordinarily rich in dietary nitrates, which your body converts into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule that tells your blood vessels to relax and dilate, which improves blood flow and reduces the workload on your heart. Studies have consistently shown that beet juice consumption can lower blood pressure, improve endothelial function (the health of the inner lining of your blood vessels), and increase exercise capacity. The effects begin within hours of consumption and can last for up to 24 hours.
Apple juice contains quercetin, a flavonoid that has been shown to reduce inflammation in blood vessels and support healthy blood pressure. It also makes the beet juice much more palatable.
Celery juice contains phthalides, compounds that help relax the smooth muscle in blood vessel walls and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for cardiovascular support for centuries. Celery is also a good source of potassium, which helps balance sodium levels and supports healthy blood pressure.
Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C and citrus flavonoids that support blood vessel health and help prevent oxidative damage to arterial walls.
Storage Tips
Fresh beet juice oxidizes rapidly, so drink this tonic as soon as possible after making it. If you must store it, keep it in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours. Store-bought sealed beet juice keeps according to the package date. Remember that beet juice will stain clothing, countertops, and cutting boards.
3. Hawthorn Berry Tea Tonic
Hawthorn berry is one of the most traditional and well-respected heart herbs in Western herbal medicine. It has been used for centuries to strengthen and support the heart, and I find this warm, gently sweet tonic to be a lovely addition to my afternoon routine.
Ingredients
- 1 hawthorn berry tea bag or 1 tablespoon dried hawthorn berries
- 1 rose hips tea bag or 1 teaspoon dried rose hips
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 teaspoon agave nectar or maple syrup
Instructions
- Bring water to a boil and pour over the hawthorn berry tea and rose hips in a large mug.
- Cover the mug with a small plate and let steep for 15 minutes. Hawthorn berries need a long steep time to release their beneficial compounds.
- Remove the tea bags or strain the loose herbs.
- Add the cinnamon and agave or maple syrup.
- Stir well and sip slowly. Enjoy this as a calming afternoon or evening tonic.
Why These Ingredients Help
Hawthorn berry has been used as a heart tonic in traditional European medicine for hundreds of years, and modern research supports its use. Hawthorn contains flavonoids including vitexin, rutin, and hyperoside that strengthen the heart muscle, improve coronary blood flow, and help regulate heart rhythm. It works as a mild vasodilator, gently opening blood vessels to reduce the resistance your heart has to pump against. Hawthorn has also been shown to have mild antioxidant effects that protect the heart from oxidative stress. You can find hawthorn berry tea in many health food stores or order it online.
Rose hips are one of the richest plant sources of vitamin C, containing up to 50 times more vitamin C than oranges by weight. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen, which maintains the structural integrity of your blood vessels. Rose hips also contain lycopene and beta-carotene, both of which support cardiovascular health.
Cinnamon has been shown to help reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides while supporting healthy blood sugar levels. Blood sugar management is closely connected to heart health, as chronically elevated blood sugar damages blood vessels over time.
Storage Tips
Dried hawthorn berries and rose hips keep in sealed containers in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year. Pre-packaged tea bags typically last 18 to 24 months. This tonic should be brewed fresh. If you want to make a larger batch of the herbal tea base, it keeps refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be gently reheated.
Loving Your Heart Every Day
Heart health is not something to think about only when something goes wrong. It is a daily practice of making choices that support this tireless organ. These tonics are a simple, delicious way to give your heart a little extra love. Pair them with movement, stress management, and a diet rich in whole plant foods, and you are building a foundation for cardiovascular wellness that can serve you for decades.
