My Journey Toward Organic Living

I didn’t set out to live an organic life. I set out to feel better.

After nearly a decade of navigating serious health conditions, I reached a point where I knew something had to change. I began exploring wellness resources, and one concept shifted everything: food as medicine. That idea, simple, powerful, and deeply resonant, was the turning point that led me toward organic whole foods and, eventually, a more intentional way of living.

But organic living isn’t just about what we eat. It’s about what we put on our bodies, what we bring into our homes, and how we care for the planet and each other. It’s about choosing products made with integrity, materials that nourish rather than harm, and routines that support our wellbeing. For a deeper dive into plant-based living, you may enjoy Finding My Way to Vegan Living, a gentle, beginner-friendly guide to compassionate eating.

Starting Small: Gentle Swaps That Made a Difference

The transition wasn’t easy. My local market carried very few organic options, and I quickly realized how much I didn’t know about toxins in everyday products, misleading labels, and the broader impact of manufacturing processes. The USDA sets strict standards for organic certification, ensuring that products labeled organic meet specific requirements for how they’re grown, handled, and processed. The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database is a trusted resource for checking the safety of personal care products and identifying potentially harmful ingredients. I spent countless hours researching, testing, and learning through trial and error.

Here are a few gentle swaps that helped me begin:

  • Food: I started with organic produce and slowly added pantry staples.
  • Prepared Meals: I discovered companies that offer organic, ready-to-eat options.
  • Skin & Hair Care: Finding clean skincare was easier than hair care, but I kept searching.
  • Cleaning Products: I swapped conventional cleaners for plant-based alternatives.
  • Pet Products: I began sourcing organic food and gentle grooming supplies for my pets.

Each change was a small step toward feeling better and living more intentionally.

Resources That Supported My Journey

Urban Remedy

One of the first resources that helped me understand the healing power of food was Urban Remedy’s blog. Here is one of their podcasts that provides a good introduction to the concept of food as medicine, Urban Remedy’s UR Love Podcast – Everyday Ritual: Using Plants as Medicine & The Benefits of Tea
Founder Neka Pasquale shares her wisdom as an acupuncturist and herbalist, offering a gentle introduction to the idea that what we consume can support our healing.

Daily Harvest

Another turning point was discovering Daily Harvest. They began with smoothies and now offer a wide variety of organic vegan foods that are easy to prepare, delicious, and deeply nourishing. Stocking my freezer with their meals gave me peace of mind and helped me stay consistent without spending hours in the kitchen.
