FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about starting and running a small business.

Getting Started

Do I need an LLC to start a business?

Not necessarily. You can start as a sole proprietorship with no formal registration. However, an LLC provides liability protection — it separates your personal assets from your business. For most small business owners, forming an LLC is recommended once you’re generating revenue or working with clients. Consult with an accountant or attorney to determine what’s right for your situation.

What’s the difference between an EIN and a DBA?

An EIN (Employer Identification Number) is like a Social Security number for your business — it’s used for taxes, opening bank accounts, and hiring employees. A DBA (Doing Business As) is a registered trade name that lets you operate under a name different from your legal business name. You might need both, depending on your business structure.

How much money do I need to start a business?

It depends entirely on the type of business. Many service-based businesses can be started for under $500 (registration fees, domain name, basic tools). Product-based businesses typically require more upfront investment for inventory. Our Startup Checklist can help you estimate your specific costs.

Digital Presence

Do I really need a website?

In today’s business environment, yes. Even a simple one-page website gives you credibility, a place to send potential clients, and a home base for your online presence. It doesn’t need to be complex or expensive — start simple and grow as your business grows.

Which social media platforms should I be on?

Don’t try to be everywhere at once. Start with one or two platforms where your target audience spends their time. For most B2B services, LinkedIn is essential. For visual businesses, Instagram works well. For local businesses, Facebook and Google Business Profile are key. Do one platform well before adding another.

What is SEO and do I need to worry about it?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your website easier for search engines like Google to find and rank. Even basic SEO — clear page titles, descriptive headings, and relevant content — can make a big difference in whether potential clients find you online. You don’t need to be an expert, but understanding the basics is valuable.
